The ECM framework is built on the primary research it cites:
- The face is not a deflated balloon — it's a mechanical system. Dermal fibroblasts attach to intact type I collagen and exert mechanical force that maintains a "youthful" phenotype; age-related collagen fragmentation collapses that force balance, driving fibroblasts to synthesize less collagen and more matrix-degrading metalloproteinases in a self-perpetuating cycle — Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling, 2018 (Fisher, Quan & Voorhees labs, University of Michigan; PubMed 29455303).
- The fragmentation loop is measurable. Fibroblasts in aged (>80 years) human skin express elevated MMP-1 versus young (21–30 years) skin; MMP-1 treatment of young skin in organ culture reproduces the fragmentation, and fragmented collagen raises intracellular oxidants — an oxidant–MMP-1 positive feedback loop — American Journal of Pathology, 2009 (PubMed 19116368).
- Fillers as mechanobiological interventions. Human in vivo studies of cross-linked hyaluronic acid provide the most direct evidence that structural support restores fibroblast spreading, TGF-β signalling, and type I collagen deposition — Gels, 2026 (PubMed 42505292).
- Rheology is product identity. Commercial HA fillers differ measurably in concentration, cross-linking degree, swelling, modulus (G′), and particle size — properties that govern lift capacity and in-tissue behavior — Dermatologic Surgery, 2009 (PubMed 19207319); the four viscoelastic parameters are defined in Archives of Plastic Surgery, 2020 (PubMed 32718107).
